The Be Smart About Art Academy:
Art is your life. Make it your living.

On Monday 27th February (6.45-8.30pm) the Be Smart About Art Academy is pleased to invite you to showcase the upcoming Academy Programme for Artists that will run from 16th April to 28th May.

Book now to take advantage of the discounted price (£5 only and it includes refreshments!)

As an example of the programme, we will have a short workshop 'An Evening for Artists - DO's and DON'Ts for Artists seeking representation by a dealer/agent'

  • Do you find yourself wondering what else you need to do to attain representation by an art dealer?
  • Do you find that galleries don’t respond to proposals you email or post?
  • Do you find it difficult to get art dealers to attend your exhibitions?

If you have answered “yes” to any of the above, this evening workshop is for you.

Be Smart About Art Academy founder Susan Mumford will outline the basics of what to do – and what NOT to do – to succeed in attaining representation by an artist representative, such as a gallerist, art dealer or art consultant.

In this evening workshop, Susan will:

  • Cover the basics of what a visual artist needs to have in place to be ready to be represented;
  • Help you decide how to select the galleries/reps to approach;
  • Give you ideas on how to research potential reps;
  • Tell you what NOT to do (things that are done all the time by artists that have no effect);
  • Advise you what you SHOULD do (proven to work by professional, successful artists);
  • Advise on making initial contact and building relationships that will lead to representation;
  • Know about what the “next steps” are when a potential rep expresses interest;
  • Advise on what you need to know prior to starting a working relationship with a representative so that you enter a mutually beneficial and protected working relationship.

The presentation will be followed by a Q&A with the audience, so that you may ask any burning questions about attaining representation and how to work with representatives.

As part of the evening, guests will also be able to find out more about the Be Smart About Art Academy for Artists and about how to apply for the course.

Places are limited so please book now to reserve your place!

Enrolled students of the Be Smart About Art Academy will be provided a password to book as this workshop is free for current students. It is still essential to reserve your place!

Note that refunds are not available after you have placed your booking.

The Be Smart About Art Academy brings artworld & commercial savvy to the work loved by artists & art dealers.

Starting in 2012, the Academy offers workshops and courses to bring commercial savvy to the work loved by artists, art dealers and artist agents. Following a workshop titled “How to attain gallery representation”, we will offer our first training course for artists, to be followed shortly by a course for art dealers, agents & gallerists. Each course encompasses six half-day workshops – once a week over a six-week period – run by Susan Mumford, along with a selection of specialist guest speakers. Areas to be addressed include: Defining your niche; writing a vision statement; overviewing and implementing marketing strategies (online and offline, exhibitions, fairs, etc); pricing; starting and closing sales; incorporating legal essentials in your business; book-keeping; transporting & insuring art and yourself; and much, much more. The course for artists is aimed at professional artists who are ready to take a step to the next level in your careerClick here to view the course programme.

The first course for artists is running currently (16th April-28th May). For details of our autumn courses, e-mail us at inspired@artiswhyigetupinthemorning.com

Two course formats are available for art dealers, a six-week long course starting on 10th September 2012 and an intensive 3-day long course (3-5 September).

In addition the Be Smart About Art Academy will run other events and workshops. Click here for more details.
